Surgeons must meet the application requirements currently in effect. Once submitted, the application is reviewed by the ABS and, if approved, the applicant is granted a number of opportunities to take and pass the required examinations for certification in that specialty.
What does the American Board of Surgery do?
The American Board of Surgery (ABS) was founded in 1937 for the purpose of certifying those surgeons found to be qualified after meeting specific requirements and completing an examination process. A major reason for establishing the specialty board was to identify the surgeon who has met a high standard of excellence.

Continuous Certification (CC), or what was once known as MOC (Maintenance of Certification) refers to the continuous process of professional development that surgeons must participate in to maintain board certification.
