Frequently Asked Questions

How do I contact BTO?

Contact WeBS
  1. General Enquiries: webs [at] bto.org.
  2. Data Requests: websdata [at] bto.org.
  3. Low Tide: lowtide [at] bto.org.

What is the bird ringing scheme?

Bird-ringing involves catching birds, securing a small metal ring around one of their legs, and ideally recording the bird's species, age, sex, wing length and weight. Rings have a reference code inscribed on them that allows that particular bird to be uniquely identified if it is caught again in the future.

How do you use BirdTrack?

To participate in BirdTrack you need to do the following:
  1. Go birdwatching and note all the species that you see.
  2. Go to the BTO website and sign-up for BirdTrack. ...
  3. Enter the location of your chosen site(s) or select from a popular site.
  4. Enter the date and time of your visit and the site you visited.

What is the difference between BTO and RSPB?

BTO is a completely independent and impartial organisation, so the data we collect are trusted and used not only by RSPB, but also by Government, policy makers, industry and other conservation organisations.

What do ornithologists do?

They study birds in their natural habitats or in the laboratory. They also may write research reports and proposals for grants, teach classes, present research to the public, and have administrative duties related to these activities. Some ornithologists, like Amanda, do all these tasks.

What is a WeBS count?

3000 WeBS counters make monthly counts at wetlands, continuing a tradition begun in 1947. The principal aims of WeBS are to identify population sizes, determine trends in numbers and distribution, and identify important sites for wildfowl, waders and other waterbirds.

@_BTO 4/6 Overall, the mean probability of a nest surviving incubation was 25%. Predation was linked to nest failure in 86% of cases & the majority of predation events happened at night, indicating mammalian predation.
2023-01-04 10:22:36
Lamp
@_BTO 5/6 Boosting Curlew nest survival is likely to require actions to reduce the impact of mammalian predators. Predator exclusion fencing could be targeted at sites supporting high nesting densities, but landscape-scale actions will also be required in the wider countryside.

@_BTO 3/6 This study investigated variation in Curlew nest survival across Breckland, eastern England to identify the conditions promoting low and high hatching success and assess causes of nest failure and likely nest predators.

@_BTO 2/6 The UK’s Curlew population declined by 48% from 1995 to 2018. Poor breeding success is the main driver of this decline but, because Curlew are still a widespread species, many questions remain about how management actions to boost breeding success should be targeted.
