@AndrewEMC This looks like a brilliant report. Reform of Ofsted absolutely key to job satisfaction, teacher retention etc. If Ofsted is genuinely interested in reducing teacher workload, then do this! https://t.co/0mDQUUtiqg

@AndrewEMC @jon_severs @MargaretMulhol2 Really interesting article. Cognitive flexibility seems to have lots in common with 'literary thinking' - Judith Langer's term for how literature develops particular forms of 'possibility thinking' in young people. So long as it's taught in open-ended ways!

@AndrewEMC @tes @Ofstednews @amanda_spielman If they are being used extensively by schools then that is deeply disturbing, though English teachers will be able to see clearly beyond the obfuscation, doublethink, over claiming + general nonsense. They're pretty good at spotting poor examples of writing too

@AndrewEMC I presented on the @Ofstednews English curriculum review last year at an @NEUnion event, drawing on the Orwellian conceit of 2+2=5 to explain its twisted logic. The doublethink continues with this from @amanda_spielman https://t.co/cBpRkCJmOm @tes

@AndrewEMC @JamesTheo @oldandrewuk @BarbaraBleiman I'll bow out too. EMC promotes a vision for English shared by many but obvs no all. We strive to draw on strategies specific to English + avoid over-claiming. We work with 1000s of teachers who are as frustrated as us by the bizarre narrowing of educational discourse + practice

@AndrewEMC @oldandrewuk @BarbaraBleiman Interesting that responses to my original tweet came from a range of subjects. False dichotomy between DI + constructivism as claimed in that silly paper seems to resonate across the board. It's not a question of exceptions, it's a question of degree/ appropriateness/ difference

@AndrewEMC @AlexJQuigley @oldandrewuk Can't access but 🙏. Getting sidetracked. So many ways work for teaching various aspects of English. Real issue is ideologically driven promotion of some + belittling of others. Btw, I meant DI not DP in previous tweet! So many terms only vaguely linked to English!
2022-12-21 00:00:00

@AndrewEMC @oldandrewuk So a single way of doing things is imposed on all subjects + then those subjects need to argue in which ways it does not apply to them? That's not hard to do but seems a colossal waste of time. Meanwhile students suffer

@AndrewEMC @oldandrewuk I'm just after one decent article that shows all subjects should be taught in the same way. One will do. Even better if you can direct me to one that is about deliberate practice working across the board, which was the focus of my initial tweet

@AndrewEMC @MrLim8888 Thanks for sending. You can certainly reduce sentences to a deliberate practice model. But to what end? Research into decontextualised teaching of grammar - which this would tend towards - suggests it doesn't develop effective writing overall https://t.co/7rKaUEpv1V https://t.co/MkRC95bo3G

@AndrewEMC @oldandrewuk @BarbaraBleiman Nope. I asked why it was included in a literature review for English - which takes as it's starting point literature about teaching English. Perhaps the authors would like to point this out. And why is it in other publications that don't mention the subjects it refers to?
2022-12-21 00:00:00
Lamp
@AndrewEMC @oldandrewuk That seems pretty obvious. So does the need for different approaches in different subject areas. I'd really appreciate it if you could direct me to the research that explains why this isn't the case

Lamp
@AndrewEMC @oldandrewuk I don't really understand this tweet. My area of expertise is English teaching + I have a decent understanding of the research underpinning it. Deliberate practice it ain't.
