Serving different markets with different needs (and having different floors).

The floor on "what's worth paying a service-provider for, versus self-serving with tech" also matters, but it's a DIFFERENT floor.

There are times when I only need to see the doctor for 5-10 minutes, but it IS a doctor visit, not a WebMD visit. Other times I need a doctor for ongoing care of a chronic condition and its dozens of hours (and also not solved by WebMD).

There is certainly a set of services that are provided by self-service tech and don't require an advisor at all. But there's still 'stuff you want advice on', for which the floor is very low. Some hourly advisors bill in 5-minute increments! Low floor!

When you have a steady flow of prospects, and confidence that will continue, you get a LOT more freedom on service models & pricing.

@MichaelKitces @kevinlum @jasonwenk @HJudeBoudreaux @altruist If you had a line of hundreds of clients and the only question was "how much does each client need", it would be 'easy' to adapt pricing and scope to every client's need (big or small). But we don't have the line of clients. So pressure is on to make each engagement 'count'.

If you can only get 6-12 new clients per year, you can't survive doing smaller limited-scope engagements. Every engagement has to be 'big'. So advisors have an incentive to conflate complexity.

@MichaelKitces @BillWinterberg @jasonwenk @grzczyk @altruist So end-game to this probably isn't advisors 'scaling up' to huge client/advisor ratios by being so 'productive', it's that the productivity will likely bring down fees & the cost of advice over time (less rev/advisor for the same clients but profits hold b/c margins are better).

@MichaelKitces @BillWinterberg @jasonwenk @grzczyk @altruist It's actually a similar parallel to the tech - 'scalability' (in the form of better tech and/or larger advisor teams) isn't resulting in more clients/advisor. It's resulting in more profits/client by reducing cost/overhead to service.

@MichaelKitces @BillWinterberg @jasonwenk @grzczyk @altruist We do see MARGINS improve as teams keep growing - planning work gets delegated to associate advisors and paraplanners at lower comp levels, which improves profitability metrics. But scaling an advisor team (past 3-4) is mostly about expanding margins, not per-advisor capacity.
