What is CJIS used for?
Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) protects private or sensitive information gathered by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. This could include fingerprints, criminal background information, copies of private documents, or anything else that could be classified as sensitive.
How far back do identity history summary checks go?
Most states have laws that restrict how far back any background check can go. When conducting employee background checks, employers must comply with the laws in their state—many of which do not allow reporting of criminal history information that is more than seven years old.
Where is CJIS located?
The main CJIS Division facility is located in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
