@Millar_Colin @scampers2009 Diogo Costa is someone who they are definitely monitoring, although I'd imagine there is a 3-5 player shortlist. David Raya another good option. I think there are plenty of highish-level options who would be available within a price budget that wouldn't offset striker price.

@Millar_Colin @Alvaro_Romeo Since Arsenal signed Granit Xhaka - who has played almost 300 games for the club - they haven't qualified for the Champions League!

@Millar_Colin @scampers2009 Don't agree on AWB and Dalot clearly a strong option, agree midfield is too light, GK situation I think can be improved relatively easily/affordably, top-level striker difficult but its the priority so should happen. Misgivings are understandable but been very good since changes.

@Millar_Colin @gyrwum It's true across all levels! If you identify the right players as part of an overarching coaching vision then it will pay off. Clubs don't need 'x transfer windows' unless they literally need to revamp their entire squad (which is very rare, especially with top coaches)
2023-01-22 07:59:56
Lamp
@Millar_Colin @TeclabYousef It's just a meaningless phrase. If you recruit right within a wider plan when everyone in the club is pulling in the same direction then you'll instantly become much better.
2023-01-22 07:58:11
Lamp
@Millar_Colin Last year, Arsenal were '3-4 seasons away' from being title challengers and Man Utd needed '4-5 transfer windows' to get back. Total nonsense. You either have a functioning recruitment strategy in-tune with top-level coaching staff or you don't. Football quickly rewards this!
2023-01-22 07:56:35
Lamp
@Millar_Colin @scampers2009 Right back definitely is not a priority and wasn't even before Wan Bissaka's huge upturn in form. One top-level striker would complete the XI and ideally you'd have an upgrade on CM backup. But those problems can be tackled by a competent, strategic club in one window.

Lamp
@Millar_Colin @OsM0627 He is clearly useful in the air but his main asset - which is very deceptive unless you watch him closely - is his off the ball work and movement. He created the space for Rashford's opening goal/strike by his run dragging Gabriel backwards. He's there to facilitate others.
2023-01-22 07:45:44
Lamp
@Millar_Colin @OsM0627 That simply isn't true though. Was ok but not great against Palace, but pressed hard and made runs vs Arsenal to move their backline. Clear that Ten Hag is the latest in a very long line of managers not to trust Martial.
2023-01-22 07:42:25
Lamp
@Millar_Colin @scampers2009 There really aren't that many gaps, they have two very decent options in every outfield position apart from central striker and holding midfield. The squad age profile isn't a big concern. Varane and Casemiro likely to have several high-level seasons left.
2023-01-22 07:40:58
Lamp
@Millar_Colin @Grafollogy Don't think the player United need long-term was ever going to be available this month. Weghorst as a short-term signing makes sense. Very clear how he fits into system and in many areas an upgrade on Martial. But they obviously need to invest strongly in that position.
2023-01-22 07:39:22
Lamp
@Millar_Colin Another parallel is both systems trump individual players. Casemiro and Rashford are clearly pivotal for United due to lack of squad depth but evidence they can compete at highest level with key absentees. Arsenal coping fine without Gabriel Jesus. This indicates sustainability.

@Millar_Colin Successes of Arteta and Ten Hag share lots of similarities. Clear leadership and authority at clubs. Big roles in recruitment. Authority to drop and/or let go high earners/captains. Enforce discipline and ground rules. Identify and develop leadership on pitch. Settled XI/system.

@Millar_Colin Arsenal deserving winners based on intensity and relentlessness of last 20 minutes but Man United perspective is they are 6 points clear of 5th at the halfway stage and have already played the best two teams in the league - by a considerable distance - twice and still in 3 cups.
2023-01-22 07:33:09
Lamp
@Millar_Colin Casemiro loss was predictably huge but difference to last season in setup and quality is night and day. Weghorst signing a clear short-term upgrade in attacking shape to Martial. Recruitment priority must now be on long-term no. 9, successor for De Gea and more midfield depth.

@Millar_Colin @kharis_kun8 Premier League could have avoided this by a) making pages more affordable or b) including all games in (expensive) packages. @Millar_Colin @chalkontheboots This is similar to that Arg-Ned World Cup match; there *should* have been red cards issued (as a result of the chaotic officiating). Decisions which were both entirely consistent (constant game-stopping, bookings) yet inconsistent (punishments often disproportionate).

@Millar_Colin @guerilla__squad @monkeysponge All based on convincing Benfica to sell at instalments - fee split equally into three separate payments. Allows Chelsea to spread the cost of the deal over financial years and present finances that add up. Benfica only agreed to this with mark-up on release clause.
2023-01-03 02:19:29
Lamp
@Millar_Colin @monkeysponge A similar perspective shared by Benfica, I think!
2023-01-02 11:45:23
Lamp
@Millar_Colin @monkeysponge This window. Benfica had no intention of selling in January and had offered Fernandez significant pay rise to stay until summer. But he'd already agreed terms with Chelsea, who then knew they needed to trigger £106m release clause. They've gone to £112m - made over 3 instalments.
2023-01-02 11:32:29
Lamp
@Millar_Colin River Plate hold a 25% sell-on clause for Enzo Fernandez. These figures would see them net a cool £28m. That standalone fee would be the Argentine club's biggest ever financial windfall, edging out Javier Saviola's sale to Barcelona. And doubling Julian Alvarez's fee to Man City.
2023-01-02 11:14:04
Lamp
@Millar_Colin @Chelseatransfe5 Exact figures based on Di Marzio's report but the nature of that report tallies with what I've been told - that agreement centred on instalments coming at that mark-up. He's clearly a sensational talent, huge potential. But a very small sample to make clear projections, I think.
