The purpose of time clock software is to electronically track and document attendance to maintain payroll accuracy. Employees insert a paper card into a machine upon arriving and leaving work. The machine stamps the date and time on the card to indicate a start and end time.

How do you read a timecard?
Add daily work hours for the week. For example, from Monday to Friday the time card shows "In-8 a.m.; out lunch-12:15 p.m., in lunch-1:15, out-5 p.m." Subtract one hour for unpaid lunch and pay the employee eight work hours for each day, which equals 40 hours for the week.
