@svembu @prakashradiare Yes. I want to only spread what has worked for us. Too easy to fall into wishful thinking and naively assume that our good intentions alone are enough!

@svembu 6/ Our village school has started a program to train youth in manufacturing skills and the associated technologies. That will grow over 2023. In 2023, I also plan to start a small rural manufacturing unit and grow that based on experience. Turn around has to start somewhere. 🙏

@svembu 5/ With 1.4 billion people, with 60% in rural areas, I am not sure there is any way forward tor India that simply accepts rural decline. Countries like Germany and Switzerland do have vibrant world-class industry in their rural areas so rural decline is not some natural law.

@svembu 4/ The descendants of those self-employed artisans are now landless labour. Their only option is migration. Those who cannot migrate fall into despair. Macro economists accept the decline of rural areas as a given, even welcome that as a sign of progress. Think different!

@svembu 3/ We also must recognise the deep despair in rural areas arising from structural economic changes caused by agricultural hardship and the decline of rural craftsmen and artisans - weaving, pottery, vessels, local machinery, vehicles, all of those self employed have disappeared.

@svembu 2/ As a first step, our media and elites should not promote a drinking culture. I have emphasized to our employees that drinking may be their private choice but as a company we frown upon public displays. I frequently warn our people that public drunkenness will get them fired.

@svembu 1/ Rural Hindu society increasingly runs on the shoulders of overburdened women. Alcoholism among men and loan sharking are causing enormous suffering. Men feel trapped in these vices and all too often choose suicide in despair. These problems have to be addressed holistically.

@svembu Village ponds used to be maintained by village panchayats and were a local responsibility. Then the state government public works department took them over. The loss of local responsibility and local control means ponds often go unmaintained for years. We must decentralize.

@svembu Covid should have taught us not to blindly "trust the experts". More evidence of how far gone the medical establishment: here is their recommendation to treat childhood obesity "aggressively", with drugs and even surgery. This is institutionalized mal-pratice, not medicine. https://t.co/XioMGnQEWy

@svembu I suspect we will see "10 year lows" on tech stock prices too. Cisco was valued at $600 billion with ~$6 billion revenue in 2000 and now with ~$50 billion revenue is valued at ~$200 billion. That's what happens when bubbles burst. https://t.co/aJtHFX2iZc

@svembu @Anirudhgargi @Bios4Action I stand corrected but my main point stands. They encouraged (funded?) Intel in modems to go after Qualcomm's margin and then bought the Intel modem unit. "Your margin ..."

@svembu @TamilNaduInfra This is a pre-Covid plan and now obsolete. After Covid, we decided not to build a big campus in one place and have started working on multiple locations (Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tanjavur, ...) All those new offices are coming up well.
2023-01-03 07:40:33
Lamp
@svembu @Bios4Action Apple also built its own modem chip and had a conflict with Qualcomm on pricing. Does that not sound like "your margin.."? Apple was not as successful in modems but I doubt they are giving up. Apple shows little interest in going after Foxconn's margin because there isn't any!
2023-01-03 07:24:44
Lamp
@svembu 2/ Unfortunately many business people under the influence of the "core competence" dogma don't pay attention to who has the margins or consider if they can compete for those margins. Investment in R&D flows from the thinking: "your margin is my opportunity". Think bold!
2023-01-03 04:45:15
Lamp
@svembu 1/ Jeff Bezos coined the slogan "Your margin is my opportunity". Apple applied this to replace high margin Intel CPUs with their own M1/M2s in their computers. Apple did not ask "do we have core competence in CPU design?" Instead they made a long term investment in CPU R&D.

@svembu @blackcat_1iii Way to lose the point. No one is saying a GM should spend 100% of the time welding. A GM must be familiar with welding. For that matter, a full time welder must also understand the bigger picture of what Railways does and why. That's the key to being a great organization.
2023-01-01 04:32:55
Lamp
@svembu "The day the General Manager starts welding, there will be a real change in the railways": @AshwiniVaishnaw, I applaud this. This is exactly the R&D mindset we need across our industry. @svembu 7/ Finally, is India on a path to producing such companies? On present trajectory, no. Indian private sector is not investing sufficiently in R & D. We have not created the culture and mental habits of being R & D driven companies. We must build the culture first. Yes we can. 🙏
2022-12-28 11:28:13
Lamp
@svembu 6/ Where will find the skilled people to staff private sector R & D? "If we build it, they will come" - when the private sector invests in R & D and signals it's deep commitment, talented people stay home. Companies also find ways to create and nurture talent as Zoho has done.
2022-12-28 11:28:13
Lamp
@svembu 4/ Now let me come to the "how". For India to build such companies, Indian private sector must invest in R & D heavily. There is no other way. The government should incentivise and persuade companies to invest in R & D. Industrial R & D is not the same as academic research.
2022-12-28 11:28:11
Lamp
@svembu 5/ The return on private sector R & D investment is enormous. Those aggregated returns from the private sector are what show up as high GDP growth and high GDP per capita. If we want a $30 trillion economy, we must invest heavily in private sector R & D. One point program!

@svembu 3/ These companies enjoy a disproportionate share of economic value added as well as profits (compared to their direct effect on employment) and also pay heavy taxes to their host nations both through their well-compensated employees and directly as corporations. That's the why.
2022-12-28 11:28:10
Lamp
@svembu 2/ First let me answer the "Why" question. These companies are extremely important to their host nations because they embody within themselves the advanced know-how and R & D capabilities essential for modern life and nationhood. Most critical R & D happens within such companies.
2022-12-28 11:28:09
Lamp
@svembu 1/ How can India produce globally competitive companies like Apple, Google, Pfizer, Samsung, Honda, Boeing, Siemens, TSMC or Huawei? Why are these companies so important to their host nations? Is India on a path to producing these companies? I will explore these quesrions.

@svembu Traditional Hindu attitude to alcohol is the same as what Christianity and Islam have had: just say no. Modernity has come to treat these attitudes as backward, uncool. @svembu Beautiful thread. The category difference between physical desire (thirst for water or desire for open space) vs metaphysical desire (quest for status) is a very interesting one. @svembu I have always pointed out Salesforce spends far more in sales & marketing than in R&D. They charge sky high prices to customers so they can spend all the customers' money selling to them. @svembu In America, boys and young men are doing worse than women, dropping out of schools, colleges and the labor force in increasing numbers. This trend is not good for society. We need men to grow up to be providers and shoulder responsibility for families. https://t.co/Oqsi8Vhhuy

@svembu @smrithirekha @anaadifdn @anandmahindra The prices are high relative to local incomes i.e. the local incomes cannot afford these EV products. The solution: we must employ locals to produce a reasonably complete supply/value chain of these goods, which both lowers their costs & raises the incomes needed to afford them.

@svembu From this morning Indian Express, Nellai Edition. We plant Okra in our farm (among other vegetables) so I know the costs involved - at ₹2/kg, it is not worth harvesting, even ₹10/kg is tough. @svembu 3/ Bangladesh is following the Mexican model of what I call "subsistence development" - you get foreign owned factories but very little value addition. Prof Panagariya misses these nuances in his broad brush Vietnam-and-Bangladesh-are-grabbing-the-foreign-factories thesis.

@svembu 2/ Japan, South Korea and Taiwan followed what can only be termed their Swadeshi model, emphasizing domestic savings and investment, mercantalist export policy, with consumer goods imports restricted. To this day, you will not find many foreign owned factories in these countries.
