What is the difference between VFW and American Legion?
The American Legion accepts members of the Merchant Marines, whom were given Veteran Status in the 1980's. The VFW continues to NOT accept Merchant Marines for membership. The American Legion is far larger organization with more members and more resources. There are many more Legions than VFW's.
Does the National Defense Service Medal qualify for VFW membership?
If a veteran's DD-214 or other military documentation confirms they have been awarded one of these campaign medals and they have served honorably, then they are eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Is VFW membership declining?
While many Veterans of Foreign Wars posts have survived the COVID-19 pandemic, they may not survive the next decade. Membership in the VFW declining as the older generation of foreign combat veterans die off and the many of the younger generation opt not to join.
