@BenefitsHuddle @RSherman_25 @AmyLewisHealth @THESHANNONCASON I think that if the players who negotiated the benefits were also in charge of the procedures and administration of the benefit they agreed to, things may look a little different.

@BenefitsHuddle @RSherman_25 @AmyLewisHealth @THESHANNONCASON The NFL and NFLPA have equal representation on the Disability Committee and Disability Board when approving/denying applications. One of the underlying problems is the reluctance of the party advisors and lawyers who operate the day to day to agree on system that is fair.

@BenefitsHuddle @RSherman_25 @THESHANNONCASON I thought the number of 3 CS pre-93 guys who got pension benefits in the 2020 CBA was closer to 600, not 10,000…unless there were other benefits included in your number. Also, it was just for pension…no disability or 88 Plan eligibility included for those guys

Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @THESHANNONCASON @RSherman_25 @HamlinIsland I fully agree with the sentiment , but in your example, the reduction would only occur if the NFL and NFLPA do not extend the T&P benefit beyond the current CBA.

@BenefitsHuddle @ChidiAhanotu Pre-retirement death benefit goes away when you elect to take your pension or at age 65, whichever comes first.

@BenefitsHuddle @ChidiAhanotu @Nextlevelsports @DevonKennard These are for pre-retirement death benefits and they follow the order listed above as far as priority. @BenefitsHuddle @ChidiAhanotu @Nextlevelsports @DevonKennard The 2020 CBA allows payment to more beneficiaries if Player is not married or doesn’t have minor children at the time of his death. 2023-01-06 03:20:57

@BenefitsHuddle @ChidiAhanotu @Nextlevelsports @DevonKennard No, just pre-retirement death benefits. At 65, players have to take their pension and can elect to have a beneficiary receive benefits upon his death.

@BenefitsHuddle @ChidiAhanotu @Nextlevelsports @DevonKennard Correct, mandatory retirement age under the Retirement Plan is 65 and the pre-retirement death benefit goes away
2023-01-06 03:00:45
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @Nextlevelsports @ChidiAhanotu @DevonKennard Also, once you start to take your pension, you lose the pre-retirement death benefit…$13,000/month for 5 years, then minimum of $7,000 for rest of beneficiary’s life. Once player takes their pension, the amount is based on pension amount and election…substantially less😔
2023-01-06 02:46:00
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @Nextlevelsports @ChidiAhanotu @DevonKennard As you may know, if a player doesn’t take his pension, it continues to grow in value. For example, if a player’s pension at 55 is $3,000/month and he waits until 65 to take it, he would receive over $8,000/month. But most disabled players aren’t afforded that opportunity
2023-01-06 02:43:26
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @Nextlevelsports @ChidiAhanotu @DevonKennard His T&P would be reduced to $0/month ($550/month x 10 months = $5,500) and he is indirectly forced to take his pension in order to maintain his income.
2023-01-06 02:29:33
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @Nextlevelsports @ChidiAhanotu @DevonKennard It affects all disabled players but it really affects guys who had successful careers and have more credited seasons. Let’s say a guy is receiving $5,000/month T&P Inactive B and played 10 years and turns 55…
2023-01-06 02:27:56
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @Nextlevelsports @ChidiAhanotu @DevonKennard And even if their benefits haven’t been stopped, at 55 a disabled player’s T&P will be reduced by the sum of their pension/legacy credits even if they don’t want to take their pension yet.

Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @Nextlevelsports @ChidiAhanotu @DevonKennard There are some real horror stories out there about Players who successfully navigated the process, received benefits your years or even decades, and have had their benefits stopped.
2023-01-06 02:24:40
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @ChidiAhanotu @Nextlevelsports @DevonKennard Exactly! Instead of a pissing match between neutral physician reports, the standard for re-evaluations should be “has the player improved?” Rather than “is he able work?” They’ve already established the Players inability to work years ago and he hasn’t been working
2023-01-06 02:19:03
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @Nextlevelsports @ChidiAhanotu @DevonKennard Those players are still subject to re-evaluations but if they get denied, they’re not eligible to reapply, because they’ve already taken their pensions. I’ve seen a couple of guys over the years in that situation.
2023-01-06 02:13:54
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @Nextlevelsports @ChidiAhanotu @DevonKennard The Players who have to be the most prepared are the disabled players who have turned 55 and who were indirectly forced into taking their pensions because of the age 55 offset.
2023-01-06 02:12:40
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @Nextlevelsports @ChidiAhanotu @DevonKennard Disabled Players not on SSA disability are generally required to be re-evaluated 5 years by a Plan neutral physician. Unless the current neutral physician agrees that you’re still T&P, the Player’s benefit would be stopped.
2023-01-06 02:09:35
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @Nextlevelsports @ChidiAhanotu @DevonKennard As you know SSA disability has different standards than T&P, so it is likely most guys on SSA will get their T&P denied because they’re not likely gonna be totally disabled in any one area. Most SSA disability is approved based on a whole person picture, not a single specialty.
2023-01-06 02:05:51
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @Nextlevelsports @ChidiAhanotu @DevonKennard The obvious one is the elimination of SSA as a determining factor for T&P. In 2024, if you’re on SSA, you will be subject to periodic evaluations with the Plan’s neutral physicians…And we all know how those usually end up for Players.
2023-01-06 02:01:56
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @Nextlevelsports @DevonKennard Currently, if you are vested you can apply for the neurocognitive disability benefit and/or T&P disability. Feel free to reach out to me and we can discuss your benefit options.

Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @Nextlevelsports @DevonKennard You are not alone Reggie…most guys aren’t aware of what’s available or they work so hard trying to make it back that by the time they realize they’ll never strap on the pads again, they’ve missed their deadlines.
2023-01-06 01:58:19
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @DevonKennard 100%!!! Awareness is key…unfortunately when guys leave the League they’re not even aware some of these benefits exist. A random pamphlet handed out during the season or a posting on the NFLPA website isn’t sufficient.
2023-01-05 08:16:00
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @ChidiAhanotu @DevonKennard In fact, provisions in the 2020 CBA will lead to many players’ benefits being terminated.
2023-01-05 04:49:54
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @ChidiAhanotu @DevonKennard Hey Chidi! Even though the last 2 CBAs extended disability benefits to more Players, it did nothing to standardize eligibility requirements or protect the disabled players from having their benefits pulled out from under them.

@BenefitsHuddle @ultCLEsports @Gbush91 Sentiment is on point but the numbers/benefit amounts are not
2023-01-05 04:20:54
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @isacarnegie Yes, a neutral physician evaluates the Player. They are “neutral” because they have been approved to serve on the panel by the NFL and NFLPA.
2023-01-05 03:38:44
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @DevonKennard Non-vested Players have up to 48 months after they’re no longer an Active Player to apply for line-of-duty. That benefit is payable for 90 months and requires Football causation.
2023-01-05 03:35:59
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @DevonKennard Yes and no…non-vested Players have up to 18 months from when they’re last an Active Player to apply for T&P disability and up to 84 months for neurocognitive disability. Any applications submitted outside of those timeframes will be denied.

2023-01-04 05:52:39
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @SheillaDingus @marcellusrivers I’m hopeful that someone from the NFLPA walks his application to the disability office once he is eligible. Except, Plan Section 3.1(d) requires a favorable report from a neutral physician to qualify for T&P. Unintended consequences for players in his situation.
2023-01-04 05:32:45
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @SheillaDingus @marcellusrivers No doubt…there were only a couple hundred guys who were able to benefit from the reduction in vesting years. Better than nothing but should have been some years ago. Should not have been done at the expense of future benefits either.
2023-01-04 05:25:14
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @SheillaDingus @marcellusrivers It is my understanding that Despite him only having 2 CS, Demar can still receive vesting status if he can get approved for T&P within 18 months of being an Active Player. Once he is approved for T&P, he is vested, regardless of number of CS.
2023-01-04 05:20:59
Lamp
@BenefitsHuddle @SheillaDingus @marcellusrivers Vesting status aside, not sure where the pension decline numbers came from. Pension/Legacy benefit credits were increased for everyone under the 2020 CBA, even reducing vesting requirements for pre-93 players from 4 CS to 3 CS.
