The Census is mandatory and failure to complete it can lead to fines of up to $222 for each day it is delayed. However, those fines won't kick in immediately. Instead, households have been reminded to keep an eye out for letters from the Census office, and potential door knocks in regional areas.

Who has to complete the Australian census?
One person in each household usually completes the form for everyone at home on Census night, 10 August 2021. If you have privacy concerns, or want to keep your information private from others in your household or group house, you can request a separate online or paper form on the Census website.
Is the ABS a government agency?
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Act 1975 establishes the ABS as an independent statutory authority, with Section 6(1) describing the six functions of the ABS to: constitute the central statistical authority for the Australian Government and provide services for the state and territory governments.
