Laval is linguistically diverse. The 2011 census found that French was the sole mother tongue of 60.8% of the population, and was spoken most often at home by 65.2% of residents.
Why is Laval called Île Jésus?
During long voyages, the island was used as a place to recoup. Quebec's territory, then called New France, was colonized by the French. In 1636, Île Jésus was given to the Jesuits as a seigneury, hence its name.
