@torontolibrary Toronto got two grants. 💰💰 The first funded 4 buildings: Yorkville (1907); Central Library (1909), the largest Ontario Carnegie library (pictured); Queen & Lisgar (1909) and Riverdale (1910). A second grant built 3 more: Beaches, High Park and Wychwood (all 1916). 🧵 7 of 8 https://t.co/Zw8eKuv3sR

@torontolibrary Nearby municipalities (now part of Toronto) also got Carnegie funds: Weston, Mimico and Western Branch in West Toronto (pictured). Many Carnegie libraries in Ontario still stand. @torontolibrary In Ontario, the first Carnegie library to open was in Chatham. It had a grand domed ceiling (something Carnegie’s secretary James Bertram thought wasteful). @torontolibrary Many Carnegie libraries were designed by local architects. Guelph architect William Austen Mahoney designed 15 of them. @torontolibrary Most Carnegie libraries were built in the Beaux-Arts style, popular from 1880s to 1920s. 🎨 Their symmetry evokes formality & elegance. Greek and Roman decorative elements like columns, sculpted friezes, porticos & domes give the buildings a grand & imposing quality. 🧵 4 of 8 https://t.co/0dz5QClCop

@torontolibrary Carnegie gave $56 million for 2,509 libraries globally, $2.5 million in Canada. 💰 For a grant, towns had to: 1. provide land 2. raise 10% of grant for annual upkeep Many in Ontario look similar as designs were all guided by Carnegie's secretary James Bertram. 🧵 3 of 8 https://t.co/yQwbwJJLt2
